Yarn structure has always been given a principal significance in determining the performance characteristics and the end use of yarn, as yarn and fabric properties are largely dependent on the structure of yarn. But producing yarn from natural fibers, without irregularities in structure and having no protruding fibers on the surface at all is still a dream for spinners. This structural irregularity including hairiness is a problem due to its aftereffects on subsequent processes for fabric manufacturing and aesthetics characteristics of fabric.

This piece of work was focused on ring spinning machine particularly variation in spindle speed and the objective was to determine the effect of spindle speed of ring spinning frame on the structural changes (surface regularity and hairiness) and strength of yarn and to optimize the spindle speed. Three yarn counts 20, 25 and 30 Tex were produced at six different spindle speeds from 11,000 rpm to 21,000 rpm with an interval of 2,000 rpm. All other parameters were kept constant including draft for a particular count, type and weight of traveller, diameter of ring and ambient conditions.

Yarn unevenness together with yarn hairiness was measured using USTER? Tester 4, yarn strength with USTER? Tensorapid 4 and visual appearance of yarns was investigated using video microscope. As a result, yarn structure went on to be more regular, less hairy and the yarn gets stronger on increasing spindle speed up to 17,000 rpm. After that, regularity and strength decreased while hairiness increased by increasing the spindle speed further. It was concluded that spindle speed should be kept around 17,000 rpm for better regularity of yarn along with strength and lesser hairiness.
