Bra fitting is a challenging research topic because it involves complex interactions between viscoelastic breast tissues and the 3D bra construction. Furthermore women’s breast morphology is highly variable and dynamic. Previous research into bra fitting has focused only on subjective assessment by the wearer herself or by professional judges, based on an arbitrary fitting checklist. The subjective ratings of bra fit attributes are typically made using interval, continuous, pass or fail, ranking, paired-comparison or magnitude scales. However, the applications for and limitations of each type of rating scale have seldom been mentioned. The science behind bra fitting has never been thoroughly discussed and the definition of bra fit has yet to be standardised. This paper provides a systematic review of all previous methods used for the evaluation of bra fit. It recommends a new approach combining both subjective and objective methods based on the physical, mechanical and visual characteristics of the fitted bra derived from the analysis of 3D scanned body images. A scientific understanding of bra fit and methods to objectively evaluate it will be useful for developing academic theories to explain the biomechanics of next-to-skin garments and, thereby, increase the satisfaction and wellbeing of consumers globally.
