Matthew Fuller
报告英文简介: Goose and duck down fibres are excellent insulating materials that are poorly understood. Despite their extremely high performance, there has been little research into their internal structure. By using transition electron microscopy (TEM), this work has revealed the presence of an orthocortex, paracortex, cell membrane complex, and nuclear remnants in both duck and goose down, analogous to those structures found in wool and human hair. In the examined goose down barbs, melanin-like and medulla-like structures were observed. While the cross-section of the duck down barbs was approximately elliptical, barbs of approximately triangular (or irregular polygon) cross-section were found in the examined goose down fibres. In an attempt to draw structure-property relationships between the two types of down, tensile testing of individual down fibres has been carried out. There was no statistically-significant difference in Young’s modulus, stress at break, or ultimate strength, between the duck and goose down. However, the tensile testing measurements correlated well with existing literature values when the fibre cross-sections were assumed to be circular. Goose down’s superior thermal resistance and excellent compression recovery may be contributed to by its supposedly triangular (or irregular polygon) cross section, and if the medulla found in goose down is in fact a void then this will also contribute. Further work will concentrate on further characterisation of down’s internal structure.
