Dispersion and exfoliation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been studied in polymer solutions and composite fibers using transmission electron microscopy. Short SWNTs have been prepared by ultrasonication in H2SO4/HNO3 mixture. Short SWNTs were dispersed in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. Scanning probe microscope image of short SWNTs on mica showed that many are individuals. Short SWNTs were crystallized from dilute solution. Morphology, electron diffraction pattern and lattice fringe of SWNT single crystals were observed by transmission electron microscopy. Based on these observations, the crystallization mechanism of short SWNTs from dilute solution was proposed. Morphology of SWNT crystal can be controlled by crystallization condition.
