Vortex spinning has been regarded as one of unconventional spinning technologies with promising features and novelty. In this technology, yarns are produced at extremely high speed by utilizing high-speed swirling airflow generated inside the nozzle by means of tangential injection. As a result, the nozzle is the key part in vortex spinning whose interior flow structure is of vital importance to the spinning process and yarn quality. In this paper, the unsteady structure of the swirling flow in concentric tubes with different lengths induced by means of tangential inlets as a model for the vortex spinning nozzle is preliminarily studied and analyzed using numerical simulation. The results show that high-speed swirling flow is formed inside the entire outer tube after the compressed air enters it through the tangential inlets. The swirling flow whirls intensively in the region between the tangential inlets and the inner tube inlet. The swirling flow is non-axisymmetric to the center of the tube. Then the swirling flow moves into the annular region between the two tubes and whirls regularly. Periodic formation of vortex pair can be seen between the tangential inlets and the outer tube inlet. A recirculation zone is also formed inside the inner tube.
